OSHKOSH - SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS PERSONAL CHECKS Everyone knows about Charles Lindbergh and his transatlantic flight in 1927. However, not everyone knows the history behind the plane he flew, dubbed the Spirit of St. Louis. The first name of the plane wasn’t the Spirit of St. Louis, but rather the less catchy name of Ryan NYP (referring to New York to Paris). The Ryan part of the name came from the designer, Donald Hall, who worked for an airplane manufacturer called Ryan Airlines, based in San Diego, CA. The Spirit was a rendition of a previous model plane that Hall had built, called the Ryan M-2. However, modifications had to be made to the plane to make the 3,600 mile flight. Lindbergh had his inputs in the plane design as well. He always thought the more engines a plane has, the more likely it is that one will fail. So the plane was designed with a single engine on a stream-lined aircraft to increase fuel economy. 33 hours, 30 minutes and 29.8 seconds after Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Airport in New York, he landed on the runway at Le Bourget Aerodrome in Paris, France. The Spirit of St. Louis checks are a great way to remember the legacy of Charles Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis. Even though he was the 104th person to make the flight, he was the first to do so in a single engine, solo flight. He proved that things that were once thought impossible can actually be done.
