He was promoted in 1863 because of his associated with Major General Alfred Pleasonton and was moved from a First Lieutenant to Brigadier General at age 23. Over the last years of the war he earned a reputation as very aggressive and willing to risk his life. In the final days of the Civil War, Custer was promoted to Major General of volunteers. Custer is most notably recognized for his battles during the Indian Wars. He was killed in 1876 at the Battle of Little Bighorn which has also become known as Custer’s Last Stand.
