BARBIE FASHION PERSONAL BANK CHECKS Barbie was born in 1959 (March 9 to be exact) by Ruth Handler. Ruth watched her daughter, Barbara, play with flimsy paper dolls and watched how she interacted with the doll. Ruth suggested the idea of an adult-based doll (which at the time there were none) to her husband, who happened to be the co-founder of the Mattel toy company. Her husband and the other directors were unenthusiastic about the idea. On a trip to Europe, Ruth Handler found a German doll with the exact characteristics that she was looking for. She purchased three of the dolls, gave one to her daughter and used the other two to rework the design. The new doll was given the name, Barbie, after Handler’s daughter Barbara. The new doll was presented at the American International Toy Fair in New York in 1959 and the toy was a huge hit. There was over 350,000 Barbie dolls sold during the first year.
